02 / Why it remains
The black dial gives this watch the character of a technical instrument. Its likely production period is the late 1930s to early 1940s, when Berna's Saint-Imier output was still closely associated with chronographs and counters; movement and case serial numbers are needed for a precise date.

The upper register records elapsed minutes up to approximately 30 minutes, while the lower register shows running seconds. The movement is photographed open, but its caliber, jewel count, balance construction, serial number, and service history remain pending direct inspection.

Berna Watch Co. was based in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, a historical centre of Swiss watchmaking. The company specialised in pocket watches, chronographs, stopwatches, and technical timing instruments sold internationally for sports timing, industrial and laboratory measurement, engineering work, aviation, and military contracts.
This characteristic black-dial layout is also connected with aircraft camera apparatus. A chronograph could sit inside a transparent housing at the front of a camera shaped like an aircraft gun. When triggered, the camera photographed the subject onto 35mm film while a prism recorded the watch dial and elapsed time on the same film. The watch was a timing instrument; it did not fire a weapon.
