This site is a private archive made public: a record of watches assembled over years, and of the questions they continue to raise. The collection began quietly, with a watch given to Liping Lin by his father when he was fourteen. It remained a constant through his years studying business at Pepperdine University, his work across technology and entertainment software—including collaborations with Microsoft—and his later turn toward investing and independent research. Horology offered a counterpoint to those worlds: slower, tactile, and answerable to the object itself rather than to a thesis.
That first watch was an Elgin pocket watch. Time, until then an abstraction, acquired a body. The piece had a life before it reached him; the case, the wear, and the movement carried that life forward. One watch produced the next inquiry: why a dial holds together, what the caliber is doing, who made it, and under what conditions it first appeared.
That is the premise of this archive. The work is to look closely, to learn with some severity, and to write so the object remains intelligible. A watch is not merely merchandise, nor a badge of taste. It can be a study in proportion, patience, craft, history, and memory. Nothing here prescribes what anyone should buy. The point is to make plain why certain watches repay the time spent with them.
The writing concerns particular pieces in the collection, and also movements, design, restoration, horological history, and the circumstances around a given object. The collection is personal and will keep changing. This page is the standing record of that work: what has been gathered, what is still being learned, and the stories meant to be passed on.
